A grader has a long blade used to create a flat surface. Normally, the engine and cab sit above two rear axles, with a third axle at the front of the vehicle, with the blade between them.

For civil engineering projects, the grader comes in to “finish grade”. This is done after the “rough grading” has been completed by the heavier machines, such as scrapers and bulldozers.
